Software development is on a growth curve, and that curve will not last forever. For a software developer in the USA and any other G7 country to remain competitive they will need to increase its productivity. If productivity is not increased, software developers will end up like the blacksmith and become obsolete. I am sure if I would of told a group of blacksmiths in 1915, that they would all be obsolete in less than 50 years, they would have thought I was crazy. History demonstrates industry after industry all experienced large growth periods followed by a rapid declines. There is no reason that software will not follow this same trend.
