The Tsunami

All these software developers are educated and trained at universities. What surprises many is the USA is the best source of faculty for the rest of the world. USA based universities are granting PhDs in computer science and management information systems to a large number of international students. There is no exact number of the ratio of international to US student, but going through some universities website it appears more than half of PhD students in computer science and management information systems are from Asia. A good example of this is the University of Texas which boasts having a lot of international students. It posts the following on the website:

“We have a large population of international students from around the world including Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Columbia, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Macao, Mexico, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Taiwan!”.

The top ten computer science programs in the USA have over 300 students in graduate school pursing a PhD in computer science. Of these 300 students, over 60% are international students and only about 40% are USA natives. Nearly 80% of the international students come from Asian countries. At many universities the students have nicknamed their computer science departments as little India. Many of these PhD’s will go back to their home countries and educate students who will become the next wave of competition for US based software development. The next wave of competition hitting the shores of the US and the other G7 countries is going to be a tsunami and potentially wipe out most, if not all, programming jobs.
